This inspired me!

I listened to this while watching Aidan sleep so innocently and I pray I can do the same for him.

Joe Biden about his mother, Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden

You know, my mom taught her children — all the children who flocked to our house — that you’re defined by your sense of honor and you’re redeemed by your loyalty. She believes that bravery lives in every heart, and her expectation is that it will be summoned. Failure at some point in your life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable.

As a child, I stuttered, and she lovingly would look at me and tell me, “Joey, it’s because you’re so bright you can’t get the thoughts out quickly enough.”

When I was not as well-dressed as the other kids, she’d look at me and say, “Joey, oh, you’re so handsome, honey, you’re so handsome.”

And when I got knocked down by guys bigger than me — and this is the God’s truth — she sent me back out and said, “Bloody their nose so you can walk down the street the next day.” And that’s what I did.

You know — and after the accident, she told me, she said, “Joey, God sends no cross that you cannot bear.” And when I triumphed, my mother was quick to remind me it was because of others.

My mother’s creed is the American creed: No one is better than you. Everyone is your equal, and everyone is equal to you.

My parents taught us to live our faith and to treasure our families. We learned the dignity of work, and we were told that anyone can make it if they just try hard enough. That was America’s promise.

Catherine, you must be so proud!!

What they forgot to tell you

July 20, 2008

All through my pregnancy, I kept hearing about how hard pregnancy and labour are. It often ended in “Once you hold that baby all will be forgotten and it is so worth it”. Yes, it was all forgotten only because it was replaced by the pain from my stitches and my sore nipples.

Then they tell you to breastfeed every 2 hours, but the 2 hours are counted from the time you start breastfeeding. If it took you from 10 to 10:45 for one session you should be feeding again at 1200. Hardly enough time to recuperate from the first session before the next. And to make matters worse, your family will hand the child over to you for feeding every time the baby starts crying. ” He must be hungry”. Yeah, but there could be any number of reasons- wet diapaer, gas, he feels cold. I could give you so many reasons other than hunger but seems like that is the easiest one to fix. Hand over baby to mom!

It’s been a few weeks since those gruelling days and things are better now. I am better at deciphering his cries and breastfeeding isn’t that frequent.

He slept for 5 hours!

July 4, 2008

Yay! That’s a first. The inspiration for this blog was the overwhelming desire to vent my frustration at being a parent, but turns out I am posting a happy happening of my parenthood. Uninterrupted sleep for 5 hours have become a thing to celebrate!

He was cranky all night and his dad had him in his arms for more than an hour. I woke up hearing the cries and finally swaddled him. He fell asleep within about 5 mins. I felt like a pro! Yay! I can put a baby to sleep. It’s July 4 and I was looking forward to some downtime with the whole family but instead there is a vacuum machine humming downstairs. We have guests coming over : ( and they are not the bbq-ing kind. We are making some vegetarian snacks for them.

The rest of the people who are entertaining with a bbq- Have a blast!!

New Parent Blues

“There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it.” ~ Chinese Proverb

We have a new baby in the house. Life has changed a lot. Whenever I get a minute, I try to imagine how life used to be before the baby and it was pretty good. Don’t get me wrong, I am enjoying my baby but it gets really overwhelming at times. New baby, my parents in the house…It’s justĀ  not the baby I have to get used to.
